Reframing Discipline

When we think about discipline, if’s ofter coupled with rules (or maybe punishment) and so often its’ associated with exercise (and/or strictness)
this person is SO disciplined we say.

Curious question: what image(s) come up for you when you think about someone who is disciplined? I

someone who is disciplined to visit their ailing parents in the nursing home? Someone who is so disciplined with volunteering?

I’m going to guess probably not?

It usually get associated with obeying strict rules (which is what the definition of it is) but what if I rewrote the definition (YOU CAN”T DO THAT JAMIE!)

I know, but how cool is it to NOT play by the rules, when talking about a thing that means playing by the rules.

What if instead of training someone how to show up the same way (think a line of quiet children)

What if showing up over and over again- (i’m starting to think I need to make up a new word for this)

meant LEARNING HOW TO ADAPT and show up in different ways?

what if someone who is disciplined in their movement routine-

meant that they were doing the mental work to figure out how to untangle it from calories and numbers?

or someone who shows up for 5 minutes one day and 12 the next, and rests the next b/c thats what they need- and allows for flow, for flexibility.

I’m not sure i have solidified this thought yet- and maybe i’m so far off, b/c I know I can’t just change the definitions of words, but for me right now- when I think about exercise and discipline, I think about the need to explore flexibility in HOW you show up.
