Community is a large part of health.
I am a part of fitness culture- I can’t deny that.
I’m a group fitness instructor and personal trainer.
So when I refer to ‘fitness culture’ I can point-
and have awareness that 3 fingers point back at me.
How am I trying to change the culture I reside in?
What am I doing to steer the culture in the direction I would like it to go?
I am trying to flip it on its’ head-
I’m trying to say (with a megaphone)
📣
that by focusing on numbers and measurements, and by not addressing our role in the perpetuation of weight stigma- we are missing the mark by a longshot.
We are missing the person.
We are reducing them down to a number to be obtained and a transformation to be had.
We are not seeing the person- the whole person.
We are not listening to their story, the one that when we truly listen, we hear a yearning for belonging- and its’ one that we all share.
--
When you are in a wonderful community- you know it.
Your contribution matters.
When you are sick, people ask about you and offer help and support.
They know your great aunt is sick and that your son is trying out for tee ball.
Community is vital to mental health,
which is a huge piece of overall health that oftentimes get overlooked by the ‘go big or go home’ fitness culture.
I want to shift that-
And that is why I speak about other factors that play into an individuals (and communities) overall health.
If you have been a part of a type of community that I speak of above, I would love to hear how it made (or makes) you feel.
