If you do me ONE favor for this morning, let it be this-
Take a ‘mental note’ of THE PEOPLE who are offering you nutritional advice/guidance on social media and check with their credentials.
Heck- go as far as DMing/messaging them what they are.
I am NOT kidding you guys, yesterday I found an account with 370K followers and the ONLY thing in the bio was “nutritional info; daily source of nutrition tips” along with some “hot bods”
NO credentials, NO identifying factors of WHAT MADE them qualified to GIVE out these tips-
NOTHING!
And it was FULL of “eat this NOT THAT” “Do this- BUT NEVER THIS!!!” type BS that wreaks havoc on the road to developing a healthy relationship with food.
BUT, BUT there are 370,000 people potentially following it (and of course, my mind thinks of all the little girls out there- starting on their life time journey with diet culture and restriction- and my heart sinks)
So, if someones’ profile says “NUTRITIONAL GURU”
and their name ISN’T followed up by OTHER letters -such as RD (ie. registered dietician)
then STOP for ONE SECOND and ask yourself if this person has received ANY education on the subject. -
RD (or registered dieticians) have to complete a 4 year degree along with loads of internship hours. -
NOW, I know there are a lot of effed up things that happen within the circle of people who have ARE DOCTORS AND LAWYERS AND PERSONAL TRAINERS AND MECHANICS and such-
but that’s a whole OTHER topic.
As a CPT (certified personal trainer) I am allowed to talk to my clients about what they eat and give guidance- BUT I AM NOT allowed to
-prescribe diets/supplements to treat medical & clinical conditions
-prescribe diets/supplements to treat symptoms of medical conditions
-diagnose medical conditions. (ie. I know my scope of practice)
So, with that being said- Here’s an ACTION step that I would LOVE for you to follow.
Here are WONDERFUL IG accounts ran by people who are from RD’s trying to undo the advice that the more popular accounts/random celebrities are spreading. -
@foodandfearless
@cakeandcarrotmama
@northwoodnutrition
@intuitive.dietician.kosher
@theintuitive_rd
And @beautyredefined (run by two PhD sisters who ROCK!)
