When I was a Physical Therapist Assistant in a skilled nursing facility, I would explain this (usually on a napkin with a pen) daily to my patients.
-
Inevitably, they would be frustrated at their “lack” of progress in the facility- which is really hard to “see” on a day to day basis.
-
I would reassure them using metrics that they might have overlooked-
I would say, you came in here not being able to walk 10ft, and now you’re walking 50+ft
-
Or, you could only bike for 2 min when we started therapy, and now- 7 min is easy for you.
-
I tell myself when thinking about the business, think “trend lines” Jamie- are you improving OVERALL? Or are you measuring ONE metric (when you should be looking at the accumulation of 19 metrics?)
-
It’s easy to get caught up on the BIG picture sometimes and think about how “slowly” things are moving-
But sometimes, stepping back and biting off “small chunks”- or asking a friend to help evaluate your progression helps because they might “see” things you may have overlooked.
-
I try to focus on “positive trend lines” for all my math friends out there 😉↗️
-
Remember, wherever you are in your journey with ANY endeavor-
YOU have come a long way to get where you are- ❤️
