“I think everyone should work in food service.” -said every person who has worked in food service.

“I think everyone should travel” -said every person who has travelled.

I will be THE first to admit that I have said ALL three of these statements within the last 3 years.

I have worked at Costco, Chili’s and have travelled to 3 other continents. .

BUT, what I have to CONSTANTLY remind myself AFTER I’ve uttered each of these statements is-

WHAT is the underlying message when I say these things?

At the core: I want someone TO UNDERSTAND something that I HAVE experienced, so they can have SOME sort of “better” effect on the outcome when they are ‘on the other side’

ie. NOT throwing clothes everywhere and being kinder to the person who folds them-, maybe attempting to pick up the table slightly before leaving and try to not be on the phone when you’re talking to your server- and lastly, see a different part of the world, or different way of life so you can comprehend why people MIGHT do the things that they do. .

We can say SO much about what people “should” experience, (ie. living in another state, having a sick family member, getting a health scare, go to college- NOT go to college) I mean, the list is endless-

Because we ALL come from OUR own place, our OWN experiences-

and going through each one of these things can either make you angry at “others”- or raise your empathetic awareness.

This is what I thought of this morning- as I laced my shoes to go work a full day with geriatric patients in a skilled nursing facility-

and I said (in my head-haha!) .

“I think everyone should work with the geriatric community to alter their perspective.”

And then I thought, “I am ONLY me, living MY life and trying MY best”- so why not assume that about others Jamie-

And BAM- I just got SERVED by me. hahahahha!
