As a fitness instructor, I have come to realize that there are a multitude of reasons that people participate in group classes.
In addition to the above statements, I have also been told that my classes have provided ‘improved clarity’ and ‘increased patience with co-workers’
-
A new mother once told me that my class felt like ‘the only human interaction’ she’s gotten in the last three months. -
All of these reasons are vital to mental health- and even though our intentions may seem ‘good & right’ at the time, we are doing our students a disservice by assuming that all who walk through the doors are looking to lose weight.
-
Yes, for some- that may be their reasoning- and by no means am I discrediting their efforts. -
My purpose here is to provide my fellow group fitness instructors and trainers OTHER reasons that people may be coming to their class. -
Let’s celebrate people who may have come to their FIRST group class TODAY- (I do this without a show of hands or calling names) but just by pointing out that “trying anything new is brave and they should be really proud of themselves.”
-
Let’s spit facts during class like, “being a part of a real life community is positively correlated with improved mental health”
-
Let’s encourage our students to “take in ALL the endorphins that movement & exercise provides and relish in the fact that they just moved their bodies for an hour”
-
Because at the end of the day, as a group fitness instructor- our students are looking to us to lead them- -
Through example and with our cueing, we have the power to rewrite what magazines and instagram filtered photos are constantly spewing at them. -
You BELONG here-
JUST as you ARE.
Right here- right now & I’m super pumped you came!
