Filled out a “after surgery” survey today and it caught my attention how my “filled in” bubble was on the low end-
33 years old- that’s like ancient right?
-
It reminded me of some@of the take away so had from working in the skilled nursing facility -
There is a *possibility* that I could live my life (33years) TWO more times!!!
-
The oldest patient I ever treated was 106 years old!
One - zero- six!
-
Isn’t that wild?!
-
Working in skilled nursing was completely eye opening for me and shifted my perspective on exercise & movement SO much-
Motion IS lotion- lubricating for your joints- walking, cycling, dancing-
-
These people would refer to their “kids” coming to visit them-
and then I would turn around and see a 65 year old-
I’m like “that ain’t NO kid lady!” 😂😂😂
-
But it helped me to realize how important movement WAS to my body-
Not insane sweating, not deadlifting 359lbs (NO shame if that’s your game—)
-
But keeping joints moving, light stretching, keeping fascia fluid...helped me not to waste a day worrying about not hitting it hard in the gym 🤨
-
But to think that 90+ is a possibility is completely insane to me.
One thing I did notice as far as recovery gains in the geriatric community-
-
Attitude.
-
That was one thing I realized was HUGE in that population- I could tell from a few sessions with a patient how their outlook on life reflected in how their bodies healed- and that’s also stuck with me from this population.
-
World view:
“Hell in a hand basket” vs. “happy I’ve made it this far!”
-
Made all the difference.
-
How old is the oldest person you’ve met/known?
